The Saeima1 has adopted and On the UNIDROIT Convention of 24 June 1995 on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural ObjectsSection 1. This Law adopts and accepts the UNIDROIT Convention of 24 June 1995 on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects (hereinafter - the Convention). Section 2. The fulfilment of the commitments provided for in the Convention shall be coordinated by the Ministry of Culture. Section 3. In accordance with Article 16, Clause 1 of the Convention, the Republic of Latvia declares that, based on Article 8 of the Convention, claims for the restitution, or requests for the return, of cultural objects brought into the Republic of Latvia may be submitted through the courts. Section 4. The Convention shall enter into force at the time and under the procedures specified in Article 12, Paragraph two of the Convention, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall announce it in the official gazette Latvijas Vēstnesis. Section 5. This Law shall come into force on the day following its proclamation. The Convention in the Latvian and English language shall be proclaimed concurrently with the Law.
