Regulations Regarding the Maximum Permitted Amount of Trans Fatty Acids in Food Products

Issued pursuant to
Section 4, Paragraph seventeen
of the Law on the Supervision of the Handling of Food

1. The Regulation prescribes the maximum permitted amount of trans fatty acids in food products which have been produced in Latvia, including in public catering undertakings, brought in from other European Union Member States, and states of the European Economic Area or the third countries, and are provided for distribution in Latvia.

2. The requirements of the Regulation shall be applied to the food products containing trans fatty acids which have occurred in the following technological processes of food production:

2.1. upon hydrogenating oil;

2.2. upon pressing oil in high temperature;

2.3. upon frying and heating food products in oil;

2.4. upon frying and grilling food products containing fats.

3. The requirements of the Regulation shall not be applied to fats and products of animal origin containing trans fatty acids that have occurred naturally and have not been added during the food production process.

4. The maximum permitted amount of trans fatty acids in food products may not exceed 2 g per 100 g of the total amount of fats, except the food products referred to in Paragraphs 5 and 6 of this Regulation.

5. The maximum permitted amount of trans fatty acids in food products in which the total amount of fats is less than 3 % may not exceed 10 g per 100 g of the total amount of fats.

6. The maximum permitted amount of trans fatty acids in food products in which the total amount of fats is from 3% to 20 % may not exceed 4 g per 100 g of the total amount of fats.

7. The food products in which the maximum permitted amount of trans fatty acids specified in Paragraph 4, 5, or 6 of this Regulation has been exceeded may be distributed in Latvia until 1 June 2018.
