On the Priority Directions in Science for 2014-2017In accordance with Section 13, Paragraph two, Clause 3 and Section 34, Paragraph four of the Law On Scientific Activity the following priority directions in science shall be approved for funding of fundamental research and applied research in 2014-2017: 1. Environment, climate and energy (environment, ecosystems and biological diversity, extraction of renewable resources, energy independence, technologies enhancing security of electric power supply, development of low-carbon industrial production, prevention of climate change and adaptation to climate change). 2. Innovative and advanced materials, smart technologies (multi-functional materials and composite materials, nanotechnologies and photonics, computing, computer science, information and communications technologies, signal processing technologies). 3. Public health (prevention, diagnostics, medical treatment, clinical medicine, treatment methods and technologies, means of medical treatment and biomedicine technologies). 4. Research on and sustainable use of local resources (technologies for the use of subterranean depths, water, agricultural and forest resources; food technologies and bio-technologies). 5. Sustainable development of the state and the public (the public, governance, resources, national economy, demography, environment). 6. Letonica (history, languages, culture, values of Latvia).
